Why is Toner a must in your beauty routine?

For many of you, skin toner might seem like an afterthought, but in fact, it is a must in your beauty routine.

And here is the big WHY?

Besides other good benefits of using a toner, I would like to highlight the most important in my experience. And believe me, I was neglecting toner for many years until I learned how it can change your skin routine game for the better.

The most important is that toner helps balance the skin’s pH after cleansing, bringing it back to its optimal level.

Even if we only rinse our face with water, the pH balance of the skin becomes disrupted.

Normal skin pH is between 4.5 and 6.2 which is considered acidic.

Soap and water are alkaline. When we wash our face, it’s very easy for the protective acidic layer on the skin to get out of balance.

This is important especially if you use facial oils so they can penetrate the skin more deeply.

When the pH level is balanced, the skin can best function to protect and renew itself.

Now that you have learned this let us touch base on additional toner benefits for different skin types.

- Not only does it reduce sebum, but it also removes any traces of makeup left after washing.

- Reduces the pores (this is so important if you have oily skin and large pores) and this prevents pores from clogging.

 - It can smooth the skin surface, reducing redness and inflammation.

 - Sensitive skin can also benefit from toner, which soothes it gently.

A toner’s purpose can be both balancing and extra cleansing.

Let’s talk now about what is the best toner for your skin?

I will give you some easy DIY recipes for different skin types.

For me, the simplicity and effectiveness of green&clean beauty products are always giving the best results.

TONER FOR OILY OR ACNE PRONE SKIN

The green tea is anti-inflammatory and will help with redness and acne, while the apple cider vinegar will bring the pH level of your skin back to a normal level.

·        3/4 cup steeped green tea

·        1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

After steeping a green tea bag in hot water, bring the tea to room temperature, discarding the teabag. Add the apple cider vinegar.  You can apply with a cotton ball or spritz with a spray bottle. Either way, you’ll want to store it in the refrigerator for no longer than 10 days

TONER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

The rose water not only will balance the skin but it’s soothing and hydrating for irritated, sensitive skin (chamomile is a great alternative if you don’t have rosebuds)

·        1/2 cup dried rosebuds

·        1 cup hot filtered water

Pour the water over the rosebuds and let sit for 1-2 hours. Use a strainer to separate the rosebuds from the rose water.  I recommend spritzing this on your face twice a day after cleansing.

TONER FOR DRY SKIN

·        1 cup Rosewater (see recipe above)

·        ½ teaspoon of vegetable glycerine

·

Combine and make sure to shake the spray bottle well before spritzing this toner on dry skin.

Hibiscus Tea Vitamin C toner boost (for any skin type)

Hibiscus is known for its ability to cleanse tone and balance the skin's delicate pH. Hibiscus is rich in alpha-hydroxy acid that naturally exfoliates and amino acids that provide a tightening effect on the skin without stripping the natural (sebum) oils. The tea also has a high vitamin c content which helps fight the signs of aging.

        - Bring 1 cups of water to boil, turn off the heat, and add one hibiscus tea bags

-Steep covered for 20 minutes.

-Remove tea bags and add 1/4 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice or vitamin C powder.
