7 benefits of using oil on your skin instead of moisturizers

 For almost 40 years of my life, I have been scared to use beauty products that contain oil and always choose one that stated “oil-free”

I wish I knew how oil can benefit my skin, it would save me from frustration, regular acne breakouts, and other problems related to oily skin.

So here is what I learned in past years since using and making my facial oil moisturizer.

 

1.     IT CAN BALANCE YOUR SKIN OIL PRODUCTION

This is contrary to the common belief that oil will make our skin even more oily. How?

 Applying oil to your skin can trick it into thinking that it does not need to produce more oil.

3.     REDUCES THE FORMATION OF FINE LINES AND WRINKLES

Too much unprotected ultraviolet light is a set-up for free radical damage — and that means wrinkles and sunspots. Most facial oils are packed with antioxidants, which prevents future aging, so if you are affected by sun damage and dryness, add red raspberry oil or those with a vitamin E base, such as Argan oil.

 

4.     NO HARSH CHEMICALS

5.     DOESN’T STRIP YOUR SKIN OF NATURAL OILS

    And why this is so important?

   Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturizing goodness in, while keeping toxins and other bad stuff out.   Some oils also help to fortify and strengthen our natural skin barrier. 

 

6.      MOISTURISES AND SOOTHES THE SKIN

Many oils have anti-inflammatory properties as well, helping to soothe irritated skin. Argan and Hempseed oils are ideal for irritations. Geranium oil is also fabulous at reducing redness from rosacea.

 

7.      HELP CLEAR AND TREAT ACNE

Using jojoba, hemp, or argan oil can reduce oil production.

 With the addition of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory essential oils such as tea tree, rosemary, lavanda this is a definite go-to to treating acne without harsh products that usually just dry out the skin.

 Just keep in mind that a small amount of the right product goes a long way. Too much of anything is never a good idea.

 

BEGINNERS GUIDELINE FOR CHOOSING AND USING THE OILS:

 When applied to the skin, the oil should absorb completely. If it just sits on top of your skin, doesn’t sink in very well, or makes your face look even shinier than before, then it’s not the right oil for you.

 If your skin feels “right” and looks supple, dewy, rested, not overly shiny, and the oil absorbs well, then you’re on the right track!

 Also, keep in mind that if your skin is dehydrated (meaning that the pores look long and stretched) then you need to be patient.

 Dehydrated skin will not fully allow the oil to sink in until the acid mantle has been restored.

And you can do that by regular exfoliation ( minimum 2-3 a week) and balancing your skin PH.

How?

Even if we only rinse our face with water, the pH balance of the skin becomes disrupted.

Normal skin pH is between 4.5 and 6.2 which is considered acidic.

 Soap and water are alkaline. When we wash our face, it’s very easy for the protective acidic layer on the skin to get out of balance. When this happens, oils can have a very hard time sinking into the skin.

The best way to balance your skin's PH is by applying toner such as green tea.

Now, how you can choose the right oil for your skin type?

I recommend picking one carrier oil and trying it out for at least 2 weeks. Play around with amounts and ratios to see what oil works best for your skin type. A few drops of a certain oil may work for some people, but some may need more or less than that, so listen closely to what your skin is telling you. Pretty soon, you’ll have a more balanced and comfortable feeling skin.

Here are few examples of different oils for the different skin type, based on comedogenic rate and properties:

 

Oily skin:  Argan, Hemp, Jojoba, Grapeseed oil, Sunflower (cold-pressed)

Combination skin: Argan, Almond, Apricot kernel, Rosehip oil

Dry skin: Olive, Almond, Avocado, Argan

You have noticed that Argan oil is suitable for every skin type for its non-comedogenic and hydrating properties.

For acne-prone skin, I would recommend that you start with jojoba oil known to reduce inflammation, breaks up plugs in clogged pores (over a few weeks), and reduces the production of sebum.

 

Adding Aromatherapy to your facial oil is a great addition to the carrier oil benefits!

 

Feeling stressed?  Add  lavanda or rose.

 Feeling down?  Add neroli, lemon, or any other citrus essential oil.

Have acne?  Add tea tree, lavanda, geranium, rosemary, peppermint.

Dry Skin?  Add rose, chamomile, ylang-ylang.

Oily Skin?  Add grapefruit, cedarwood, lemongrass, lavanda.
