Why Everyone is talking about Toxic beauty?

Being a Hairstylist and working in the beauty industry I was exposed daily to so many harmful chemicals daily. It was just easier not to think much about it until it started affecting my health.

I developed severe allergies, one of the side effects of working in the cosmetic industry, also my hormones were terribly unbalanced.

This was one of the reasons why I started making different lifestyle choices and looking for beauty products that are natural and clean.

Finally, I even decided to ditch the hair dye ( best decision ever)

I was reading and educating myself about all things natural, discovering so much about how we poison ourselves daily with different beauty products.

It was a scary discovery!

One of the articles from the University of Rochester Wilmot Cancer Institute (USA) was touching the hair dyes issue.

Here is a small portion from the article that was very important to me, as a hairstylist, and perhaps you might find it too.

„ HAIR DYES- A tricky subject and a personal choice. Some facts to consider: The FDA banned lead acetate (linked to neurotoxicity) from hair dyes in 2018, more than 5000 different chemicals are used in hair dye products and some have been linked to cancer in animals, according to the National Cancer Institute; but personal use of hair dyes is not classifiable as carcinogenic to humans, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Darker hair colors contain a chemical known as PPD (para-phenylenediamine), made from coal tar, a petroleum derivate that contains other harmful chemicals. The greatest risk may be to hairdressers due to constant exposure“

This is just about hair dyes, not even mentioning how many chemicals we have in other products that we use daily.

In my research I found a list of the most harmful ingredients that are found in beauty products:

-Parabens

-Synthetic colors

-Fragrance

-Phthalates

-Triclosan

-SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate)

-Formaldehyde

-Toluene

-Propylene glycol

-Sunscreen chemicals

These chemicals can affect our respiratory system, cause allergies and skin irritations, cellular damage, mess with thyroid and hormones, some carcinogens, and weaken our immune system.

This is just naming some of the bad effects on our bodies.

It is very important that we educate ourselves and read the ingredients before we choose what to buy.

If you think of ways how you can replace your beauty products think no further than your kitchen cabinet first!

Start with simple things like lip balm, or moisturizer oil that is right for your skin, or simply using a variety of herbal teas for your skin toner.

I mean possibilities are endless because most of our food we can use as skin and hair care.

With a little bit of research and changing your mindset, you can have pure, natural, sustainable products that will benefit your health and beauty.

I now live by the mantra.: If I can’t eat it why would I put it on my skin? And really just think about it.

Skin is our biggest organ and it can absorb even 60% or more of the toxic chemicals we put topically.
