5 Easy Homemade Face Scrubs

Simple homemade face scrubs are the perfect addition to your at-home skincare. The ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find. You probably have most of them in your kitchen already, and it’s so fun to use what you already have.

But let's see first Why do we need to exfoliate?

Dead skin, makeup, oil, and free radicals all take a serious toll on our skin. As we age, our self-exfoliation rate changes and it gets tougher for our skin to do the job on its own.

What happens is our pores end up getting clogged, and the upper skin layers get dull and thick, creating uneven skin tones. So we need to exfoliate to help our skin do its job!

There are two ways we can exfoliate, chemical and physical.

I prefer chemical exfoliation done with a professional. It is usually done with Alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs. Common examples of AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and mandelic acid.

I will focus here on physical exfoliation that is simple and effective to do it yourself.

I recommend using a physical exfoliant (scrub) about 2–3 times a week

For a physical exfoliation, you’ll want to start with a clean face. It doesn’t have to be dry if you’ve just washed your face. Take some face scrub with your fingertips, and wet your hands slightly, gently move in circular motions around your face, avoiding your eye area.

You do not need to use any extra pressure, just moving the scrub around your face provides enough pressure to get the job done. Wash off with warm water and follow with a moisturizer.

Here are 5 recipes for easy homemade face scrubs:

1.    Gentle Oat Scrub

Soothing and anti-inflammatory oats are ideal for sensitive skin. Ground oats gently unclog pores while their natural saponins cleanse and absorb dirt and oil.

-   ½ cup oats (uncooked)

-  Water

In a blender, pulse the dry oats until finely ground. Place a pinch of the ground oats into the palm of your hand, then add water until a paste forms. Gently massage into your face and neck. Store the ground oats in an airtight container for later use.

2.    Honey & Coconut (Brown) Sugar Scrub

Honey and sugar are natural humectants (moisture preservers) that make a gentle scrub to buff away flakes, clear out pores, and lock in moisture.

-1 tablespoon brown sugar (the finer, the better)

-1 tablespoon honey, preferably raw

Mix the brown sugar and honey. Then very gently apply the scrub to your face in small circular motions. Rinse with warm water and use a washcloth to remove any residual honey.

3.    Flax seeds

Flax seeds are both anti-inflammatory internally and externally.

-1 teaspoon ground flax seeds or flaxseed meal

-1 tablespoon carrier ingredient (aloe vera gel, yogurt, honey, jojoba oil, rosehip oil)

Mix well together, and then remove with warm water.

4.    Baking Soda Add-In

With its superfine texture, baking soda acts like at-home microdermabrasion for all skin types. This inexpensive ingredient also absorbs excess oil, so it’s especially helpful for oily skin.

-1 teaspoon baking soda

-Your regular skin cleanser

Possibly the easiest scrub to make, just add 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a small amount of your regular cleanser, and you’ve just made your product work double duty as an exfoliating cleanser.

5.    Sea&Epsom salt

This is the ultimate scrub that I love using 1-2 a month as it is deep cleansing and pore purifying. It is great for loosening blackheads. Excellent for oily skin but suitable for all skin types. This scrub can be used for whole-body exfoliation.

It is important to blend salts in the blender to make it a fine texture as it can be too abrasive for the skin. These salts contain various minerals that are very beneficial for the skin.

-1 tsp Epsom salts

-1 tsp sea salt

-1 tablespoon olive, hempseed, almond, or argan oil

Mix together and gently massage the skin, remove with warm water and washcloth.

Now that you have recipes and tips on how to do it don’t let parched, dry skin get in the way of your glow!
